FAQ

Technical questions, straight answers

Platforms, standards, networks and how we actually run a project.

Which PLC platforms do you program and support?

We work vendor-agnostic, but most of our work is Rockwell/Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, Micro800), Siemens (S7-1200/1500, and older S7-300/400), plus Schneider Modicon, Omron Sysmac and Mitsubishi.

Code is written in the standard IEC 61131-3 languages — ladder, structured text, function block and SFC — in Studio 5000, TIA Portal, EcoStruxure Control Expert or Sysmac Studio. Systems we build are documented, commented and backed up so any integrator can pick them up.

Can you migrate a legacy PLC or control system without a long shutdown?

Yes — legacy modernisation is a big part of what we do: SLC 500 / PLC-5 to CompactLogix or ControlLogix, DH+ / Remote I/O to EtherNet/IP, and equivalent Siemens and Modicon conversions.

We convert and test offline first, run a factory acceptance test before anything is touched, then do the physical cutover in a planned window — after full code, program and drawing backups are taken.

What industrial networks and communication protocols do you work with?

EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS DP, Modbus TCP/RTU, EtherCAT, IO-Link, DeviceNet and CANopen, plus OPC UA and MQTT where plant-floor data has to reach IT or the cloud.

We handle managed-switch configuration, VLAN segmentation and IP planning, and we can audit and diagnose an existing network when comms faults are intermittent.

What HMI and SCADA platforms do you develop on?

SCADA and supervisory work is mostly on Inductive Automation Ignition — historian, alarm management, OEE/KPI dashboards and reporting. On the HMI side we program FactoryTalk View ME/SE, PanelView Plus, Siemens WinCC and Comfort Panels, and AVEVA InTouch.

Screens are built around operator reality: alarm prioritisation, clear device states, trends for diagnosis — not decoration. Systems can run on-premise or be published securely for remote and mobile access.

Do you design and build control panels, and to which standards?

Yes — panel design and fabrication is in-house: layout, schematics, bill of materials and assembly.

Panels are built to UL 508A / CSA and wired to NFPA 79 practice, with SCCR considered, correct overcurrent protection, numbered conductors and full as-built documentation. They arrive functionally tested so field wiring is the only thing left to land.

How do you handle machine vision and inspection systems?

We select the camera, lens and lighting for the application, program the vision tool or smart camera, calibrate it against real parts, and wire the pass/fail result into the PLC — including reject and rework logic.

Typical applications: presence and orientation checks, measurement and gauging, 1D/2D code reading and traceability, and robot guidance.

What does a project look like from quote to commissioning?

Scope and I/O list → schematics and panel build → programming and offline emulation → factory acceptance test → site install → commissioning and verification → operator training and as-built handover.

You get milestone sign-offs and one point of contact. Changes are captured in writing so scope stays clear on both sides.

Who owns the PLC code, drawings and documentation when the job is done?

You do. Source code, program backups, licence details and as-built drawings are handed over at completion — nothing is password-protected or locked.

We also set up a documented backup routine, so recovering from a controller or drive failure is a restore, not a rewrite.

Do you support systems you didn't build, and can you troubleshoot remotely?

Yes. A large share of our maintenance work is on equipment originally commissioned by someone else. We audit the existing architecture, fix what's broken and document what we find.

Where it's appropriate we set up secure remote access for fast diagnosis, backed by a support agreement if you need guaranteed response.
